History:
Four years is a long time for one to wander with a life that is far from glamorous and perfect. It all started when two dogs on the streets of Asia decided to have some fun. A few weeks later, and a litter of puppies was born under an abandoned car in an alley. The first thing that Jester can recall was landing into a puddle of water after coming out of the birthing canal. It was cold, dark, and damp under the car. The water was no doubt mixed with oil that was dripping from the car that they were born under, along with parasites and trash. Born into an unwelcoming and unpleasant environment, Jester didn’t have a hope in the world that the world was good in any way shape or form. As the days passed after his birth, most of his brothers and sisters died of pneumonia or the fleas and ticks sucked the life from their frail bodies.
By the time he began to walk, there were only four of them left. They finally began to venture out from under the old car, little puppies caked in dirt and oil. Under the watchful eye of their mother, they first experienced the vast and crazy environment known as Asia. The streets, they quickly learned, was not the safest place, as one of his sisters ventured out and was ran over by a car. The two legged walked in masses, not even noticing the small family that walked along with them. The world was a constant threat, and his mother gave them many lessons. Do not enter the street unless you want to be killed. Always watch the humans, look for possible food to steal, and stay out of their way unless you wish to be stepped on. She also told them that if you weren’t careful, humans would capture you, and that was the end. Either you got kept as a pet, or you were killed and hung up as meat on the market. Humans were the enemy, end of story.
At 5 months, their mother suddenly disappeared. Jester never understood why, but him and his brother and sister moved on. They figured the humans got her, or she just got fed up with them and finally left. Either way, they had learned the way of being a stray in Asia, and knew how to fend for themselves. The three formed a formidable little group, and most starving dogs stayed out of their way. They stayed together not because they enjoyed each others company, no, they fought amongst themselves often. They stayed together because it ensured their own safety, and it was easier to steal when there were others to distract. His sister was the pretty one, the sweetheart, who buttered up the humans and lured them away from their food. Jester was the one with the brains, and planned everything. His brother was the strongest of them, and tended to scare off most dogs that came their way. By the age of 2, the trio ruled the streets. Some humans hated them, and others willingly gave them free food.
The tourists were the easiest to snag food from. They didn’t know how conniving the dogs were, and before they knew it, things were stolen right out of their hands. The humans that came into town were soft hearted, unlike the locals. They took pictures, and called to them, stroking their dirty matted fur and giving the dogs looks of pity. Whenever the tourists asked who the dogs were, the locals would tell them they were local strays. Their names? Jester was known for the smile that he greeted the humans with, and so they dubbed him Houkan Ko-Do, or “Jester chord”, because it always seemed like he was joking around. He was always doing silly things to get the tourists attention. The locals all saw through his act though, because they knew he only acted like that to get what he wanted from the tourists. His sister was named Aigyou Wan, which translates to “Loving one.” His brother was given the name of Kyo Inu, meaning “Big dog.”
Some of the tourists turned out to be trouble though, and ended up ruining Jester’s reign on his streets. There was some sort of organization that rescues dogs came into the town, and before they knew it, dogs were disappearing here and there. The mange-infested Jester went to sleep one night, and the next morning awoke to find he was locked inside some sort of cage! Naturally, the government would not allow a dog with parasites from Asia to go out of the country, not to mention Jester didn’t have any sort of shots. Taken to the nearest animal hospital, the dog found himself being dumped onto a cold, slippery table. Then the humans came, putting a muzzle on him and then proceeding to stab him with needles and taking fecal samples, the whole nine-yards. As soon as it was determined that he has mange, they took him straight to the bath and treated him for the mites.
After a few weeks of recovering, and slowly gaining hair back, the government decided that it was fine for the stray dog to move right along. The rescue organization had come from America, and thus, was taking Jester with, along with a few other dogs. When he arrived in America, he was promptly placed in some sort of building, with a male and female human. There was a yard around what they called ‘home’. The humans continued to give him the baths, with the treatment for the mange. After a few weeks, Jester seemed to be on the right path towards recovery. The life as a “pet” was driving him insane though. He needed wide open streets, none of this fencing and only going out of it with the human, on that silly rope that choked. It didn’t help that he didn’t understand most of what the American’s said.
One day, when the silly American’s weren’t watching, Jester lifted the latch on the gate, and wandered right on out of the yard. Now he’s on the loose, him and his sarcoptic mange, and boy does he love sharing it with the silly American dogs.
Personality:
Just as his name means, he is quite the joker, and tends to keep things on less of a serious note. Even if the most tense situations, he can crack jokes. In general, it tends to irk a lot of dogs, and further annoy them. Annoying people is probably one of the top reasons he acts so careless, too. While others are stressing over silly things, he just laughs at them. Being serious isn’t even in his vocabulary, it seems. It gives the dog a sort of childish, immature sort of characteristic, which also bothers a lot of people. For one of four years old, surely you’d think he would of grown up and matured, right? Never. Jester is constantly teasing and poking fun at others, for his own pure amusement.
Where Jester comes from, nothing is free, and he’s long learned to fight for what he wants or needs. Despite his condition, he still has a bit of muscle, and can still put up a damn good fight. Besides, not many animals even want to pick a fight with him anyways. They don’t want to risk getting close and getting infested with the mange that the dog has. That alone seems to be the best defense against all the violent strays that think they are tough shit in this new American town he got dumped in. Jester is well skilled in the art of stealing, as would be expected from where he came from. He is quite sly, and knows just how to get what he wants without someone knowing. Sneaking around is something he is just about pro at. The shadows are his friend. Though, he has long came to terms with the fact that he can’t just ‘blend in’ with anything, including other dogs. He’s ugly, and he knows that, and normally he’ll poke fun at himself and joke about his own looks.
Jester is quite the bold dog, as in, he isn’t scared to do anything. Hence why he is so good at stealing. Sure, speaking your mind out in Asia wasn’t the smartest idea, unless you could back up your words, but he’s quickly learned that in America, half the dogs don’t have the backbone behind their words. America is full of trash talking spineless idiots, and he will flat out call a dog out on it. Jester isn’t afraid to step up to the plate and do something crazy. His life isn’t really something he cares about, especially since his family is back in Asia. Nothing really matters to him, so, he isn’t afraid to harm himself in the process of doing something crazy. Being so use to humans, he isn’t afraid of most of them, though he always keeps a watchful eye on them.
As one would expect, Jester’s English is far from perfect. His words are often backwards, and it’s not uncommon for him to miss words as well. It’s frustrating to him, so it’s quite common for him to start speaking Japanese smack dab in the middle of speaking English. All in all, it tends to confuse others, but does he care? No, not really. If they can’t understand him, then its their problem, not his. After all, he knows exactly what he’s talking about. The idiot American’s are the ones who don’t understand! Jester finds it hysterical to talk in another language, and see how confused people get. He makes a habit out of insulting in Japanese too, though he’ll try his best to repeat it in English if he can.
Another trait he’s picked up from being on the streets is being manipulative. Jester is willing to use people in order to gain, and isn’t afraid to do so. Hell, if you ask him about it, he’ll flat out admit to it. If the person doesn’t like it, then he’ll find some new person to use. It’s just the way he’s been taught. Use or be used. If he sees an opportunity to use someone, he’ll suddenly become their best friend. He’s been told he’s quite two-faced, which sort of fits him because of his name. Jester’s fools others, putting on a mask and acting as someone they aren’t. That’s exactly what he does, as well.
Jester finds it down right amusing to share his mange, too. Most aren't very appreciative of this, but does he care? No, he really doesn't. Jester enjoys getting close to other dogs, just to see them squirm and move away, uncomfortable by his extremely haggard appearance. Yes, Jester is quite sick and twisted, finding joy in others discomfort.
Mother always told him to share.
