The heartbeat of the pup pounded in his chest, beating so fast and hard that it felt like his chest would soon explode. The small jaws of the pup were parted, long pink flesh called a tongue hanging out the side of it. Drool dripped down from the tongue as he ran. All the way from the forest he had ran, and there was no stopping the 2 month old coonhound as he dashed towards his home. It felt like time had stopped ever since the incident with the bear had happened. No, it had just happened though. He had just watched his human fall victim to a bear, along with the other two coonhounds that he had been with. His first instinct was to run home, where it was safe.
Finally, a familiar road appeared just beyond the trees. Luke dashed out of the trees and straight out onto the street, which lead to the loud screech of tires as a car slammed on their breaks so they wouldn’t run the puppy over. The human blasted the horn of the car at the puppy, along with a string of curses. Luke yelped, freezing in his tracks like a deer in headlights as the car stopped a mere foot from hitting the puppy. His chest rose and fell as he stared at the big white escalade that had almost hit him. The human was still shouting at the dog, screaming and shaking her hands up in the air.
Adrenaline still flowed through the pups body, allowing his limbs to unlock. Suddenly he darted out of the street, racing down along the sidewalk towards his home. There it was, a small blue house without a fence in the front yard. Quickly he ran over to the front porch, jumping up the three porch steps and making his way to the front door. Standing up on his hind legs, his forepaws resting on the front door, tail wiggling slowly as if someone inside would open the door. A small whine escaped the pup as he stood outside the front door, scratching at the old wood door.
Deep down he knew though. Nobody would be opening that door.
