The half-moon hung high in the sky by the time the elderly border collie hobbled into the mouth of the cavern. Looking ahead into the dark opening, she thought she caught a glimmer of light, but with her fading vision and senile mind, she couldn't be sure. She pricked her ears, making sure that her apprentice was behind her as she led the way into the consuming darkness. She knew that the younger dog would be more frightened about the dark, not because Featherleaf was braver, but because her sight was already so bad, that it made very little difference. As they padded through the tunnel that led to the main cave, she slowed her pace so that her fur brushed against her apprentices, so she could guide him and comfort him as he walked toward his destiny.
All of a sudden, a blinding light erupted from ahead, and the elderly healer shuffled on as fast as she could, eager to be in the main chamber of the cavern. When the two dogs entered the chamber, a dazzling sight met their eyes. Thousands of half-buried crystals sparkled in the moonlight, which was shining through a small gap in the roof of the cave. Even though she had seen the cavern before, Featherleaf could not suppress a gasp of wonder at the shimmering crystals. They were beautiful.
Neither of the dogs had said a word since they entered the cavern, as was the custom, so Featherleaf motioned toward a large rocky outcropping with a huge chunk of crystal embedded within it. She padded over to it, looking over her shoulder at Forgotten, motioning for him to follow.
Lifting her nose skyward, she spoke softly at first, then her voice grew into a loud, raspy tempo, "Forgotten, is it your wish to enter the mysteries of a healer?"
